What Really Happened to Kanye’s Ex-Fiancée Alexis Phifer?

Kanye West is known for several things: having some of the hottest bars in the game, turning fashionable looks, being outspoken, and being seen with some of the baddest chicks around. At the start of his career, he was engaged to a woman named Alexis Phifer. However, the engagement was broken and things between them fell apart. 

Here’s what we know about Kanye’s ex-fiancée Alexis Phifer and what she’s up to now.

Meeting Alexis

Prior to meeting Alexis, Kanye was dating his high school sweetheart, a woman named Sumeke Rainey. Their relationship got serious as time progressed, and theYBF website revealed Kanye even bought her a ring. But in 2002, while still dating Sumeke, he met Alexis…

During those times, Kanye wasn’t quite a household name. The YBF reports he was drawn to Alexis because she was a fashionista. He remembered she was wearing Miss Sixties brand jeans and he told Harper’s Bazaar he felt underdressed next to her because he had on a throwback jersey.

He also loved how smart she was when it came to business. And according to the YBF, she was able to get him in contact with some influential people that she knew. They started dating and she helped him create his image by styling his outfits.

Moving on with Brooke Crittendon

Kanye reportedly called it quits with Alexis in 2004 and moved on with aspiring actress Brooke Crittendon that same year.

Brooke met Kanye when he was opening for Usher at his New York show, and she was working as a production assistant for MTV. Brooke told The Sun website that within months, she and Kanye were inseparable. He was based in Los Angeles at the time, but he bought a place in New York to be closer to her. 

In 2005, Kanye reportedly reunited with Alexis, but he continued his relationship with Brooke as well. In February 2006, he attended the Grammy Awards and as he walked down the red carpet, it was Brooke who was by his side.

But Brooke knew he had other women in his life. She told The Sun Kanye was very open and honest about the other women he was dealing with, but it became too much. Brooke said, “He wanted and needed me to be OK with certain things I wasn’t OK with.”

Brooke said they began arguing and things got really nasty between them. They eventually broke up sometime in 2006, and Kanye quickly moved on with Alexis…

Sealing the deal with Alexis

Sources told Us Weekly Kanye’s mom, Donda West, really liked Alexis and she gave Kanye her blessing to make things official. Donda was the closest person to Kanye, and he loved and valued her opinion. So just six months after attending the Grammys with Brooke, Kanye took Alexis on a trip to Capri. According to People magazine, over a dinner of lobster and pasta, Kanye popped the question and Alexis said yes.

Shortly after their engagement, they invited Harper’s Bazaar into Kanye’s Hollywood Hills home which they shared together. Alexis showed off her closet full of designer clothes by Stella McCartney, Rachel Roy, and pieces from her own fashion line called Ghita. 

While Kanye was getting ready for the release of his album entitled Graduation, Alexis was focusing on debuting her fashion line at New York Fashion Week and working on ideas for their upcoming nuptials. She told the magazine she wanted a figure-flattering yet dramatic wedding gown.  

After playing his field and having his pick of women, Kanye was ready to settle down. During an interview with GQ magazine, he said he just wanted to get married and didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. He said, “It’s for me, for stability in my life, and I’m so happy that I found someone that I really love.”

Did his mom’s passing affect his relationship?

Kanye’s life went into a tailspin in November 2007, when his mom passed away at the age of 58 due to complications from a plastic surgery procedure. From that point on, his life and relationship with Alexis would never be the same.

A friend told People magazine Kanye was going through a rough time and was putting all his focus on his upcoming “Glow in the Dark Tour.” His friends started seeing less and less of Alexis as the months passed by and sources added that the passing of Kanye’s mother negatively affected their relationship.

In April 2008, just five months after his mom passed away, Alexis confirmed to People magazine that they had called off their engagement. She added, “It’s always sad when things like this end, and we remain friends.” She also wished him the best and called him one of the most talented people she had ever met.

Kanye moves on with Amber Rose

The same year he and Alexis broke up, Kanye moved on with Amber Rose. And Amber didn’t waste any time throwing shade at Alexis. According to Vibe, during a radio interview, Amber said, “You see Kanye’s other ex, he was with her for six years, took her to the same places and no one even remembers her name now.”

Years later, Alexis addressed Amber’s comment by telling Vibe she just laughed it off. Alexis added, “She doesn’t really know what she’s saying, so I can’t even be mad at her. She doesn’t even know the half.”

Alexis explained that while dating Kanye, she wasn’t seeking any kind of attention. And following their breakup, she retreated from the spotlight because that’s what she chose to do.

After dating somebody like Kanye, Alexis admitted that it was nice to have her anonymity back. She said she was a mom, and she likes to go out with her son without anyone recognizing her. 

While Alexis stated she had been approached to appear on a reality show a few times, she was tempted by the offer but decided it wasn’t the right route for her. Because being a mom is very important to her, she wasn’t comfortable with the lifestyle and didn’t want her image to be portrayed in a negative way.

What’s Kanye’s ex-fiancée Alexis up to now?

Following their breakup, she continued working on her fashion line, and it was her passion for clothing that kept her going. She also told Vibe she was looking forward to having a big family and three more kids in the near future.

Although she claimed to love her life away from the spotlight, Alexis made headlines again In February 2016. Alexis posted a photo of herself wearing some clear shoes, and later on, Kanye’s then-wife Kim Kardashian was spotted wearing a similar style. With the belief that Kim was biting her style, Alexis took to her Twitter and wrote: “Hmm them clear shoes lookin real familiar.” 

That same month, Kanye, Kim, Amber, and Amber’s husband Wiz Khalifa had an all-out social media war. Things got heated and real personal when Amber tweeted that Kanye enjoyed having fingers placed inside a certain area of his body. And guess who put themselves into the mix? Alexis of course. She co-signed Amber’s statement by confirming she had the same experience when she was dating Kanye.

These days, Alexis is still as fashionable as ever. She has a new clothing line called A-Threads based out of Los Angeles that consists of classic, ready-to-wear pieces that celebrate the feminine silhouette. She keeps most of the details about her romantic life under wraps but we hope she is happy and receiving all the love she deserves.
