Normani may have broken onto the scene in Fifth Harmony, but these days, she’s ready for solo success. From dynamic collaborations with Sam Smith and Megan Thee Stallion, to her memorable performance of her hit song “Motivation” at the MTV VMAs, it’s clear her time is now.
How does she manage to stay focused on her bustling music career and manage to maintain a healthy lifestyle? Here are some of Normani’s diet and exercise secrets.
It’s all about the tea…and water
Normani ensures she’s hydrated every day by drinking water and herbal tea. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, not so fast. There is a method to her routine. She told People magazine she drinks two cups of Total Life herbal tea every day. She then drinks 16 oz of lemon alkaline water and 64 ounces of alkaline water on its own.
45-minute circuit training
BET sent a staff writer to workout with Normani and her crew and, boy, was she in for an intense session! The 45-minute workout consisted of a non-stop circuit session. There were jumping jacks, planks, bicycles, squats, oh my!
As you can imagine, there were plenty of other exercises throughout. Fortunately, they had some bomb music in the background, making the entire workout a bit more bearable to survive.
Discipline comes first
In the end, Normani’s diet and exercise regimen all comes down to staying — and this is something she learned early in life. “Discipline is the number one thing,” she told Modeliste Magazine.
She began dancing at the age of three and joined gymnastics at the age of four. While she’d eventually choose dance over gymnastics, learning the importance of school, practice, homework, dinner, repeat, prepared her to be physical specimen she is today.
On-stage gym
When she’s on the road touring and performing, making time for the gym isn’t always an option. Normani told Modeliste Magazine she has the perfect substitution for when she misses the gym. “I would say my workout regime would be every night on stage performing hour-long sets,” she shared.
After getting off stage, Normani says she feels the same as if she would’ve spent an hour in the gym.
She still stuffs her face with seafood
Maintaining mental and physical health is important in any industry, but especially in the entertainment business. Normani shared with Cosmopolitan that she’s guilty of overworking herself to the point where she’s pushed herself too far.
In an effort to find balance and maintain some mental and physical clarity, she told Modeliste Magazine she heads straight for a seafood place called Hot and Juicy. “I love seafood, so my mom and I actually go there and eat a lot, and stuff our faces,” she said.
Crabs, sausage, potatoes, corn, and butter!?! I get it!
Zumba class is the best cardio
Learning that she’s a fan of Zumba shouldn’t come as a surprise. Not only was she trained in gymnastics and dancing as a child, but she was also a member of a girl group. For some reason, members of girl groups always have the best bodies (hello, Kelly Rowland). Normani also killed it on Dancing With the Stars, although she got robbed and didn’t take home the crown. So it’s safe to assume dancing is one of her favorite things to do, and it goes hand in hand with Zumba.
Considering she feels her best cardio is done while performing, a Zumba class is right up her alley. Normani even partnered with Zumba to sport some of their clothes during her time in Fifth Harmony.
Making it up with extra workouts
During her time with Fifth Harmony, Normani and her groupmates found out first hand how addictive Flaming Hot Cheetos are. But, they always made sure to counteract their indulgences.
While in conversation with Just Jared Jr., the group explained how they snuck in extra workouts to not feel bad about eating junk food. Now that’s something I can get behind. Workout to eat junk!
Hold the tomatoes, please
You won’t find tomatoes anywhere in Normani’s diet. Well, not the actual fruit, at least. Reality TV World revealed the singer is anti-tomatoes, but oddly enough, she loves tomato soup.
I’m actually the same way! Give me a grilled cheese with soup any day.
When it’s time for dessert, she goes vegan
While speaking with Vogue, she shared that she does a really good job of feeding her body salads, smoothies, and water. She even did a great job of avoiding pizza in New York City. But the one thing she can’t live without is ice cream.
Her ice cream spot of choice is a vegan option called Van Leeuwen. So even when she’s enjoying a cheat treat, she’s still fueling her body with a healthy option.
