Los Angeles Lakers LeBron James makes his family life no secret. From his funny Taco Tuesday videos to his viral fandom for his son, LeBron is a family man on all fronts. But as the saying goes, behind every great man is a great woman.
While everyone finds themselves on a quest for #relationshipgoals and #blacklove, we couldn’t think of anything greater than LeBron’s consistent love for his wife Savannah James, the woman who is the glue for the #JamesGang.
They’ve been an item since they were both students at opposing Akron, Ohio high schools. Three kids later, they’re still going strong.
Here are 10 sweet moments where LeBron put his love on full display for his beautiful queen.
She was with him ‘shootin’ in the gym’
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, LeBron James referenced Drake’s famous line from the song “Stay Schemin‘,” where he raps: “You wasn’t with me shootin’ in the gym.” The line was, of course, made in reference to former Laker star Kobe Bryant’s wife Vanessa Bryant potentially getting a sizeable portion after she filed for divorce in 2011 (she subsequently called it off less than a year later, though).
For LeBron, this line came as a bit of an epiphany. “In all actuality, Savannah was with me shooting in the gym when I (had) absolutely nothing,” he told THR. While some could consider it a dig at Kobe, it was nothing of the sort. LeBron acknowledged that Savannah had been down for him from the beginning and that in itself is worth celebrating.
He wanted her in his life
LeBron James sat down with Oprah Winfrey about his intimate New Year’s Eve 2012 proposal. “She had been there for a long time, and I wanted her to continue to be there,” he told the talk show host. Aww.
And he was right. When he asked Savannah to be his wife, they had been together for ten years and already had two kids together, Bryce and LeBron Jr. They welcomed their third daughter, Zuhri James, in Oct. 2014 — shortly after celebrating their one-year wedding anniversary.
Wedding Bells
Three-years ahead of their Sept. 2013 wedding, the high school sweethearts opened up about their romance to Harper’s Bazaar. Not only did Savannah say: “I just love him so much. We’re soul mates,” but LeBron had some very sweet words to say, too.
“A person like myself always needs a great sidekick and a person you can rely on no matter the circumstances,” he said. “And she’s that… she’s got my back and I love her for that.”
Savannah is the engine
LeBron was in a lovey-dovey mood back in Nov. 2019 when he took to his Facebook to share what kind of impact Savannah has had on his life. In his lengthy caption, he revealed the only reason he’s able to perform at his highest level on and off the court is because of his wife. He added: “I’m just the car, she’s the engine! Appreciate you Wonder Woman aka Queen.”
A honeymoon declaration
LeBron James stole a moment on their honeymoon in Italy to sing more praises to his new wif via Instagram. In a photo set with all the feels, cuddles, and remnants of love, he wrote: “When u have someone that’s always there for you no matter the ups and downs in life, it makes it all worth living for! So happy to call u Mrs. Savannah James.”
Someone pass us a tissue!
She’s his support system
LeBron James was back at it again with another sentimental message for his wife. Alongside a photo of them wearing matching black ensembles, the Los Angeles Lakers star wrote on Instagram: “The Real reason why I’m able to do what I do both on the floor and off it at a very high level!”
It was a similar sentiment to a similar message he shared on Facebook, but we’re sure he was just making it clear to all the doubters that Savannah truly is the backbone of their family and his life.
In ‘Vogue’ and in love
LeBron James and Savannah found themselves in Vogue magazine in 2017, where they discussed everything from parenting to household rules. Usually, these articles focus on the megastar, but LeBron shared this occasion with his wife. He shared a photo from their magazine cover shoot and wrote in an Instagram post: “V-Mom-Vannah, she’s many things, but most of all, she’s incredible!”
Missing her when he’s away
As one of the living legends in the NBA, LeBron James travels to away games over half the year. During those times when he’s missing his wife the most, he posts a cute photo not only for her to see but for the world to share in on their special love.
“Damn I miss you!! Can’t wait to get back home,” he wrote via Facebook. “Got a lot accomplished while gone but I’m ready to get to the Kingdom, see the cubs, curl up underneath you, watch a movie and recharge.”
LeBron knows he got lucky
LeBron James doesn’t need a special occasion to roll around in order to honor Savannah. But in honor of her 33rd birthday, he had a very special message for her. Alongside a photo of his wife, wearing a white silk camisole and matching pants, LeBron wrote via Instagram: “Some got no luck and some got all the luck in the world. I definitely got lucky with you that for sure.”
Yes, you betta stan for your wife!
His sweet apology
LeBron runs an empire and makes it clear that he wants to win at all costs. Because he’s so dedicated to the game of basketball, he told the Road Trippin’ podcast he found himself apologizing to his wife while on his quest to be the best. “I’ve at times lost the fact of how important you are to this whole thing,” he said.
His hustle is commendable, but we love how he’s aware that without Savannah, there’s no King James!
I’m sure if you asked Savannah if a date at the tender age of 16 at an Outback would have landed her here, she probably couldn’t imagine it. But, if there’s anything to learn here, it’s that the only reason LeBron is able to thrive today is because she has held him down through it all.
Cheers to a powerhouse of love and excellence!
