Toni Braxton and Birdman made their red carpet debut back in June 2016, and since then, fans have been a little perplexed about their romance. They appear to be complete opposites, but their relationship seems to work for them…well, sometimes. There are some weird things going on with their messy relationship.
They’ve been friends for years
In an interview with Wendy Williams, Birdman revealed he and Toni have been friends for almost two decades. They first linked up when the singer was featured on Birdman’s debut album for his 2002 song, “Baby Can You Do It.“
In the music video, Toni and Birdman got very flirty, and the chemistry between them was off the charts. But they kept things platonic because, at the time, Toni was a newlywed. She had just married Mint Condition group member Keri Lewis the year prior to hitting up the video music set.
A big purchase
Three years after her divorce from her ex-husband was finalized, Toni and Birdman made many public appearances together. And just months after they became an official couple, Birdman splurged on a Bentley SUV for his new girlfriend.
According to Hip Hop DX, the luxury ride has an estimated price tag of close to $300,000. So what’s so strange about a man buying his woman an expensive gift? Well, a year before the big purchase, Lil Wayne alleged that Birdman and Cash Money Records owed him for the delay of his album, Tha Carter V. Lil Wayne was demanding $51 million dollars, according to TMZ, and some people thought the money Birdman used to buy Toni’s Bentley should’ve gone to Lil Wayne Instead.
Was she still single?
Days before she received her new car, her sister, Tamar Braxton, jumped on Snapchat and asked her followers to help find Toni a boyfriend. These kinds of mixed signals made many people wonder if Toni and Birdman weren’t serious about each other, or if Tamar was just being her usual, messy self.
He put the pressure on her
Birdman popped the question in February 2018, and Toni told E!’s Daily Pop that Birdman told her to pick a wedding date ASAP because he wanted to get married before 2018 came to a close. At first, Birdman told her he wanted their nuptials to take place in California, then he changed his mind and said they could get married in a drive-thru. It would’ve been Toni’s second marriage and Birdman’s first. But 2018 would pass them by, and Toni kept pushing back their wedding date. She told Essence magazine that her work commitments kept getting in the way of wedding planning. But a lot of her fans thought it was a sign of trouble in paradise.
Something is missing
They were only engaged for nine months when Toni revealed in a tweet that she had left her Louis Vuitton train case on a Delta flight from New York to Los Angeles. Inside of the case was her yellow diamond engagement ring that was reportedly worth $5 million dollars, E! News reports. The next day, she let her fans know that her train case had been recovered, but a lot of her jewelry, including her pricey engagement ring, was still missing.
Even Birdman wondered why she took the ring off in the first place. But he told Wendy Williams he wasn’t too worried about it because he would just splurge on a new ring if he had to.
New year, new problems
In Jan 2019, two months after her jewelry went missing, it appeared that she and Birdman had called it quits. Birdman posted “It’s over” on his Instagram Story, according to E! News, and Toni scrubbed her whole profile clean. She then posted a photo of herself wearing a red dress, along with a caption that read, in part, “Starting a new chapter isn’t always an easy choice, but ALWAYS choose to be chosen.” The pair also reportedly unfollowed each other on the social media platform. And you know what that means? It’s Done…or maybe not…

They’re more in love than ever
By the time April 2019 rolled around, it was clear that they were still very much in love with each other. A source told HollywoodLife that their relationship was solid, and they didn’t mind all the drama surrounding their romance because it brought more attention to Toni’s reality show, Braxton Family Values. SMH.
